Grades & Requirements
Principal Designations
Associate
Entry level designation;
Hold a degree or professional qualification (other than in exceptional cases)
Be engaged in management consultancy or business advisory services in Ireland
Certified Management Consultant (CMC) or Certified Business Adviser (CBA)
The CMC and CBA designations are competence-based qualifications. Applicants must produce sufficient, relevant and timely evidence of competence, experience, education and training as a management consultants or business advisers by:
- producing a detailed Assignment Study
- making a presentation to the Membership Review Board on the subject of the Assignment Study
- completing a Professional Record, including a CV
- providing corroboration of the evidence provided in the Assignment Study and Professional Record at an Assessment Interview
- giving details of three independent referees who can vouch for the applicant’s competence as a management consultant
- completing an Application Form
CMCs and CBAs are full Members of the Institute
Other Designations
Fellow
A Fellow must demonstrate competence at a strategic level over a period of five years
after becoming a full member of the Institute by becoming a CMC or a CBA.
Honorary Fellow
This is the highest designation that can be awarded by IMCA. It is awarded for outstanding service to the Institute. There are two Honorary Fellows- Gerry McLarnon and Roy Hanan, both former Presidents.
Student Member
A student attending the Michael Smurfit Business School Diploma MBS in Management Consultancy; Similar courses may also be recognised as being eligible for the grant of student membership from time to time.
Retired Members
Members of the Institute who retire from management consultancy work and who are over 60 years of age.
Members (who are not CMCs or CBAs)
Persons who have become Members of the Institute but who do not now fulfil the requirements to use the designation CMC or CBA.
Members not in practice
Members who are not now engaged in management consulting (for example, persons who have taken up employment or Government appointments) but who wish to retain their membership of the Institute
Affiliates
Persons who wish to support the Institute or be involved with the Institute in some way but who are not eligible to become Associates because they are not presently involved in management consulting or business advisory work.
